The resetting process is several steps. After the marker is excavated, dirt is backfilled and then tamped down to remove air so that the stone will not lean again.

The marker is then given the proper orientation, due east, with a compass. All of the stones face east.

The headstone is then set plumb, straight up and down, with a level.
