With the discovery and excavation of this stone, the date of the graveyard was pushed back. Previously, the oldest stone we had found was 1872. This sandstone, with its hand scratched lettering, is dated 1850 - well before the Civil War. The stone reads

James Madison

Williams was born

July 11, 1850

The students also found what appears to be a footstone, with the grave measuring one meter (39 inches) in length, making this a child's grave. One of our research tasks now is to identify this pioneer family.
