Many of the markers are just rocks or fieldstone, as at left. These may be the earliest markers or belong to some very poor families. Sometimes they also mark the grave of an infant or child. In some cemeteries with graves before the Civil War, the rocks mark the graves of slaves. An engraved headstone in McCortney Cemetery that was placed in the 1870's or 1880's was probably cut in St. Louis and would be rather expensive.
