Probing in an westerly direction from the footstone, a rock was felt at the base of a 40 ft. hickory tree. Excavation revealed this triangular (pointed) field stone, which may have been a temporary marker, lodged under two large roots.

The base, which originally sat on the surface of the ground, has sunk 18 inches below surface level and the tree has grown over it. Further excavation would to extract the base would require a deeper and longer trench, reaching under the base. This would reach into the possible grave area and, at this time, does not seem to be a good idea. Cutting the two large roots is also problematical.
