In 1941, the small rural town of Waynesville and the surrounding area was overwhelmed by 32,00 construction workers who were building Fort Leonard Wood.

Demand for accomodations was high and workers rented any available shelter. There were several cabins behind the OSS that were rented to the construction workers in 1941 and then later to the soldiers.

Sue, as a teenager, worked hard. She told of the workers coming in to their rooms, caked in clay from the muddy construction site, and falling into bed with their clothes and boots on. She was kept busy changing and washing bedclothes. Workers rented beds in shifts and a bed might be rented out several times a day. The McNeeses also owned a business in Carthage, Missouri. Sue collected the rental rate of $1.00 a day.
